Network design - For strategic decisions (facility location, supplier selection, transportation lane design), SageMaker models evaluate scenarios that balance cost, speed, and resilience. The model quantifies the resilience value of dual-sourcing, safety stock, and geographic diversification.
Architecture
Supply chain data from ERP, procurement, logistics, and demand systems flows into Redshift. Amazon Forecast generates demand projections. SageMaker models run supplier risk scoring, inventory optimization, and network design scenarios. Results feed back into ERP planning modules via API. QuickSight dashboards provide supply chain visibility: order status, inventory positions, supplier performance, and risk alerts.
Key Considerations
Data integration - Supply chain optimization requires data from multiple systems that often do not communicate well. Master data consistency (product codes, supplier identifiers, location codes) across systems is a prerequisite.
Scenario planning - The value of AI in supply chain management is highest when used for scenario planning: what happens if this supplier fails, if demand increases 30%, if a shipping lane is disrupted? The ability to rapidly evaluate scenarios improves decision quality during disruptions.
Change management - Supply chain planners may resist automated recommendations. Transparent explanations of why the model recommends a different plan than the planner’s intuition build trust and adoption.
Cross-referencing - Supply chain optimization connects to demand forecasting in retail, route optimization in logistics, production scheduling in manufacturing, and inventory management across industries.
