116 Companies Sign a Collective Cyber-Defence Letter on AI-Enabled Attacks
On 27 August 2026 OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, AWS, Visa, Mastercard, IBM and over a hundred others published an open letter warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks will become widespread within months, and that status-quo security will not hold.
On 27 August 2026, 116 companies and entities — the figure CNBC reports from the signatory list — published an open letter on collective cyber defence, hosted by OpenAI. (Counts in coverage vary: Silicon Republic said “around 120,” SecurityWeek “nearly 130.” The list was open to additions after publication, which is the likeliest explanation; treat any single number as a snapshot.) The signatory list is unusually broad for an AI letter: frontier labs, hyperscalers, security vendors, payment networks, telecoms, and professional services firms. The central claim is a timing claim — that “in the coming months, AI-enabled cyberattacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated” — and the central admission is that, in the signatories’ words, “status-quo security won’t be sufficient.”
What happened
Signatories reported across coverage include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and AWS, Oracle, IBM, Cisco, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Okta, Fortinet, Hugging Face, Visa, Mastercard, Capital One, Deutsche Telekom, ServiceNow, Shopify, General Motors, PwC and Accenture.
The letter breaks its asks down by who is being asked:
- Organisations generally — treat cyber defence as a leadership-level priority; deploy capable, lower-cost models broadly rather than reserving AI for a security elite.
- Cybersecurity firms — lead on testing and intelligence sharing, and make AI-based defensive tooling accessible to critical infrastructure operators.
- Governments — coordinate at local, national and international level; fund and expedite deployment; and specifically get defensive AI into the hands of under-resourced operators such as hospitals and water treatment plants.
- Frontier AI companies — provide model access along with funding and training, build security tooling, ensure traceable agentic identities, and share threat assessments and best practice.
That fourth bucket is the one that commits the letter’s own authors to something. “Traceable agentic identities” in particular is a concrete engineering obligation: if an autonomous agent takes an action against a system, there should be a way to attribute it.
The context that produced it
This letter did not arrive in a vacuum. 2026 produced a run of incidents in which agents were the attack vector rather than the target, including the Hugging Face breach involving an OpenAI agent and the broader pattern documented in AI agent security incidents .
It also arrived in the same fortnight that Z.ai delayed the GLM-5.3 weights release because, in the company’s account, cyber capability had improved faster than expected during post-training — and then published those weights anyway on 28 August, with a benchmark score of 84.5% on CyberGym. Why it matters for builders
Read the asymmetry claim carefully, because it is contestable. The letter’s implicit argument is that AI currently advantages attackers, and that coordinated deployment can flip that. The counter-argument is that defence benefits at least as much from cheap capable models — triage, log analysis, patch generation, and detection engineering are all bounded, high-volume tasks that models do well. The honest position is that nobody knows the equilibrium yet. What is not contestable is that the cost of running an automated attack has fallen.
“Deploy capable, lower-cost models broadly” is actionable today. The recommendation is not to buy frontier reasoning for your SOC; it is to stop rationing AI to a handful of analysts. Given August’s pricing moves, the economics support this.
Agent identity is the gap to close in your own stack. If your agents authenticate as a shared service account, you cannot attribute an action to a run, and you cannot revoke one agent without revoking all of them. Fix that before you need it. See zero trust for AI and AI security best practices .
Note what a letter is. This is a voluntary, non-binding statement of intent by commercially interested parties, several of whom sell the defensive products it recommends buying. That does not make the threat assessment wrong. It does mean the letter is evidence about the industry’s expectations, not a commitment you can hold anyone to.
