The technical approach: citizen authenticates, AI retrieves relevant data from connected government systems, populates the form, and presents it for review and confirmation. Only fields not available from existing records require manual input. This requires strong identity verification and clear data sharing agreements between agencies, but the pattern is technically straightforward once those foundations are in place.
Multilingual Support
European governments serve linguistically diverse populations. Amazon Translate provides automated translation that Amazon Bedrock can use to respond in the citizen’s preferred language. For languages with significant minority-language communities (Catalan, Welsh, Basque, regional dialects), quality varies - translation quality should be validated by native speakers before deployment.
For written communications, AI-translated responses should be flagged for review if they will be used in legally significant contexts. For general information provision, translation quality is usually sufficient.
Status Tracking
Application status inquiries are one of the highest-volume inquiry categories for benefits and permit-issuing agencies. An AI that can query back-end case management systems and provide real-time status updates - with appropriate authentication - handles this category at near-zero marginal cost per inquiry.
The integration work (connecting the AI to case management APIs) is typically the main technical challenge. Most legacy government case management systems were not built with API access in mind and require middleware to expose data securely.
