Apache Superset - Open-Source Business Intelligence Platform
Apache Superset is a modern, open-source data exploration and visualization platform designed for interactive analytics and dashboard creation.
Apache Superset is a modern, enterprise-ready business intelligence web application that enables data exploration and visualization. It provides an intuitive, no-code interface for creating charts and dashboards, as well as a powerful SQL IDE (SQL Lab) for ad hoc querying. Superset supports over 40 database backends through SQLAlchemy, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Trino, and Apache Druid, making it a versatile front-end for virtually any analytical data store.
Superset’s visualization layer includes dozens of chart types out of the box, from standard bar and line charts to geospatial maps, pivot tables, heatmaps, and deck.gl-powered 3D visualizations. Dashboards support cross-filtering, drill-down, and native filters with hierarchical dependencies. The platform’s architecture is designed for scale: it uses a metadata database for configuration, a caching layer (Redis or Memcached) for query results, and Celery for asynchronous query execution. Role-based access control and row-level security allow fine-grained data governance.
Superset has been adopted by thousands of organizations as a cost-effective alternative to commercial BI tools like Tableau, Looker, and Power BI. It is particularly popular in data engineering teams that prefer SQL-first workflows. Companies including Airbnb, Dropbox, Lyft, Netflix, and Twitter have used Superset for internal analytics. Preset, a managed Superset cloud service founded by Superset’s creator, provides a SaaS option for teams that prefer not to self-host.
Key Capabilities
- Interactive Dashboards - Drag-and-drop dashboard builder with cross-filtering, native filters, and automatic refresh
- SQL Lab - Full-featured SQL IDE with syntax highlighting, autocomplete, query history, and result visualization
- 40+ Database Connectors - Native support for major analytical databases via SQLAlchemy and custom DB engine specs
- Role-Based Access Control - Granular permissions with row-level security, dataset-level access, and dashboard embedding
Cloud Equivalents
Apache Superset is the open-source alternative to AWS QuickSight, Microsoft Power BI, and Google Looker. Commercial BI tools offer deeper integrations with their respective cloud ecosystems and more polished end-user experiences, while Superset provides unlimited users at no license cost and full customization.
Origins and History
Apache Superset was created by Maxime Beauchemin at Airbnb in 2015 (originally named Panoramix, then Caravel). It entered the Apache Incubator in 2017 and graduated as a top-level Apache project in January 2021. Superset is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Beauchemin co-founded Preset in 2018 to offer a managed Superset service. The project has over 60,000 GitHub stars and a contributor community spanning hundreds of organizations.
