A dark silhouette juggling a red ball, a green club, and a blue ring, representing an agent handling several tasks at once on your behalf.
Claude Cowork takes the agent that codes and points it at everyday work: files, apps, and recurring tasks.

Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agentic assistant for knowledge work. It brings the same agent architecture as Claude Code to everyday tasks, with no terminal required. You describe an outcome, and Cowork reads and writes your actual files, works across your applications, completes multi-step tasks on its own, and delivers the finished result. It moved from research preview to general availability on 9 April 2026.

Where it lives

Claude Cowork runs inside the Claude Desktop app on macOS and Windows. The desktop app is free to download; Cowork itself is part of your paid Claude subscription. Because it runs on your machine, it can reach your local files and connected applications directly, rather than only the text you paste into a chat.

What it is for

Cowork is built for work that has several steps and a defined output, the kind of task you would otherwise do yourself across a few apps.

  • Autonomous multi-step tasks. You describe the outcome and Cowork takes the actions to reach it, keeping you informed as it goes, then delivers the finished work to your folder.
  • Real file access. It reads and writes the files and applications on your computer, so the result lands where you work, not trapped in a chat window.
  • Scheduled tasks. You set a cadence once and Cowork repeats it: check your email each morning, pull metrics, or run a weekly Slack digest.
Step 1DescribeYou state the outcome you want and, if it repeats, the cadence.
Step 2PlanCowork breaks the work into steps and the files and apps it needs.
Step 3WorkIt acts across your files and applications, reporting progress.
Step 4DeliverIt saves the finished work to your folder, or runs again on schedule.

This is an applied AI agent : a system that plans, uses tools, and acts over many steps, rather than answering a single prompt. Anthropic offers a related agent for teams, Claude Tag , which lives inside Slack channels instead of your desktop.

Which subscription you need

The Claude Desktop app is free to download. Cowork is available to all paying subscribers.

  • Pro (about 19 EUR per month, listed at 20 US dollars) and Max (about 92 or 185 EUR per month, listed at 100 or 200 US dollars): Cowork in the desktop app, with more usage on Max.
  • Team and Enterprise: available to members, with the usual admin and billing controls.
  • Free: the desktop app installs, but Cowork is a paid feature.

The Claude product family

Claude Cowork is one of several products built on the same models. They differ mainly in where they run and what they produce.

When not to use it

  • You just want to chat or draft. The plain Claude apps are lighter for questions and one-off writing.
  • The work is code in a repository. Claude Code is built for editing, running, and shipping code in your terminal and IDE.
  • The task lives in a shared team channel. Claude Tag puts an agent inside Slack for collaborative, asynchronous work.
  • You are cautious about file access. Cowork acts on your real files and apps, so review what you let it touch before granting access.
